If you want to have a safe a successful training day at the range, make sure you are equipped with the right gear.

Here are five pieces of essential gear for the gun range.

1. Eye & Ear Protection

Ear & Eye Pro are a must. If you can’t see you can’t shoot. You don’t want to go blind from ricochets or deaf from hearing loud gun shots. Your eye pro should be rated impact-resistant ANSI Z87.1 or military ballistic MIL PRF-31013, Clause 3.5.1.1. For hearing protection foam plugs, ear muffs, or electronic hearing protection are all usable options.

IFAK (Individual First Aid Kit)

Accidents happen no matter how well trained a person is. You have to be prepared. The amount & quality of aid you receive immediately after a life threatening injury (like a gunshot wound) can be the difference between life and death. Everyone should carry a IFAK with at least this basic medical gear.

  • C.A.T. Tourniquet(Combat Application Tourniquet)
  • Trauma Shears
  • Pair Nitrile Gloves
  • Compressed Gauze
  • ETD(Emergency Trauma Dressing)
  • HyFin Chest Seal

3. Pistol/Rifle Cleaning Kit

Every weapon should be cleaned after firing. With that being said sometimes weapons get extra dirty during use and jam up or malfunction. Some lubrication or a hasty cleaning might be necessary during your training session. You need to be prepared with a range cleaning kit. This should include, oil/lubrication, bore brush with rods, cleaning rag, scrub brush, and a multi bit screw driver.

4. Range Bag

So, you have you ear and eye protection, you first aid kit, your weapon cleaning kit, as well as you weapon, magazines and ammo. Now you need a bag to carry all that gear. A range bag is a good option because it has specialized pockets and compartments for the exact gear you are carrying. With some range bags you can add attachment pouches to further accommodate your needs. Weather you are carrying a pistol, rifle or both an appropriate sized range bag is a necessity.

5. Body Armor

You usually don’t see people wearing body armor at the local gun range, but depending on what kind of training you are doing it might be something to think about. If you are doing tactical training with multiple people that includes moving and shooting body armor would be a good idea. Even if you are training in a static firing position but there are many shooters at the range body armor would be a good idea. Some people don’t have good weapon handling skills and everybody has different levels of safety training. Some body could easily point their weapon in your direction and have an accidental discharge. Choosing the type of body armor depend on wear and what kind of weapons your are shooting.

For tactical training with rifles you would need hard armor level III plates with a vest that you can attach your mag pouches and trauma kit. For no moving pistol training a concealable soft armor level IIIa vest would be sufficient.
